The Painted (gilded) edge printing process is a specialized technique used to apply metallic or decorative finishes, such as gold, silver, or other colors, to the edges of printed materials like business cards, announcement cards, or books. The process involves adding a metallic sheen or color to the edges of the card, enhancing its visual appeal and giving it a luxurious, high-end look.

Here’s how the Painted edge process typically works:

  1. Card Stacking and Trimming: First, the cards are cut to their final size and neatly stacked together to ensure uniformity. It's important that the edges are smooth and aligned for the gilding process to be effective.

  2. Edge Sanding (if needed): In some cases, the edges are lightly sanded to ensure they are perfectly smooth. This step helps the gilding material adhere evenly across the entire edge.

  3. Adhesive Application: A specialized adhesive or sizing is applied to the edges of the stacked cards to prepare them for the metallic gilding. This adhesive layer allows the metallic foil or powder to stick to the edges uniformly.

  4. Metallic Foil or Powder Application: Once the adhesive is set, metallic foil (such as gold, silver, or copper) or metallic powder is carefully applied to the card edges. This can be done manually or with a machine, depending on the production scale.

  5. Polishing and Finishing: After the metallic finish is applied, the edges are polished to ensure the foil or powder is smooth and shiny. This step enhances the reflective quality and gives the gilded edge its signature luxurious look.

  6. Drying or Setting: Finally, the cards are left to dry or set, allowing the metallic edges to solidify and bond securely to the cards.

The result is a beautifully Painted edge that adds a premium, elegant touch to any printed piece, making it perfect for special occasions, high-end branding, or corporate announcements.
