Offset Printing

What Is Offset Printing?

Offset printing (also called lithographic offset printing) has been one of the most popular forms of commercial printing for the last 60 years.

Offset printing gets its name from the process of transferring ink from the plate roller to the offset roller, where it is pressed to the paper. It's called "off-set printing" because the plate that holds the image is off-set so that it never actually touches the paper!

Offset printing creates rich, vibrant color that digital printing just can't match. The high quality results and ability to print large orders at affordable costs are the reasons that at BargainPrinting, we ONLY use offset printing for all of our services, including brochures, business cards, and post cards.

We only use offset printing because it results in:

  • Consistent and high quality printing for each item in large print orders.
  • High speed and efficiency, resulting in shorter waiting time for you.
  • Ability to print on a wide range of printing surfaces including paper, wood, or metal.

How does Offset Printing Work?

Offset printing operates on a very simple principle: ink and water don't mix.

The offset printing process begins with a 'plate' that is moistened with water. Ink is then applied to the moistened plate, making it the source of the image being printed. Then the image is transferred to a rubber blanket and finally onto the final paper. This process can be repeated at high speeds to produce a large number of high quality printed items.

Unlike other forms of plate-based printing such as etching, offset printing does not need the plate to be raised or etched, making the creation of new plate designs easy and fast. Instead being etched, offset printing plates are chemically treated so that the water and ink remain in place and transfer accurately.

Additionally, offset printing can use premixed inks in a variety of specific colors as well as metallic and florescent inks. These are called spot colors.
